Producers of ABC's The River promise a scary show, but not a gory one.

"ABC said to go as scary as we want to go. But we don't want to gross people out," executive producer Oren Peli said after a world premiere screening of the mid-season series that received a positive but not rave reception at Comic-Con.

"It's going to be a little less Saw and a little more Poltergeist," executive producer Zack Estrin said.

The River, from Amblin's Steven Spielberg, Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey, follows an Amazon rescue expedition that is looking for a famous wildlife show host (Bruce Greenwood) who has gone missing.

His wife (Leslie Hope) and son (Joe Anderson) are part of the search party that encounters a mysterious and violent force as they track the lost adventurer through the remote jungle.

One fan asked whether the producers had thought out a story arc for the series. Fans have been disappointed in some cases when they think a serialized show is drifting with no planned conclusion, but producers said they have plotted out where their story is going.

"We know what we're doing, thank you," executive producer Michael Green said.
